Klar, Bargteheide ist ja fast um die Ecke. Bin dort früher sogar zur Schule gegangen.
Früher habe ich mal in Ammersbek gewohnt, könnte dir auch was sagen.

Ich kopiere einfach mal was ich vor gar nicht allzu langer Zeit bei Lemonamiga zu fast dem gleichen Thema geschrieben habe. Ist allerdings in englisch und deutlich ausführlicher als die anderen Beiträge hier.

I'll start with my own home town Braunschweig, known as Brunswick to the Anglo-American world.

It's located in Lower Saxony, Germany about 250 km west of Berlin and 170 km south of Hamburg, imbedded between the Lüneburger Heide in the north and the Harz mountains in the south.


It was founded in the early nineth century and grew to an important trade centre in the medieval times as a part of the Hanseatic League. It was the capitol of Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg which existed (under several names) until the end of the monarchy in germany in 1918. Braunschweig was home for arms industry (i.e. the Bf 110 fighter plane was built here) in the 1930s/40s, so it's no surprise that it was a target for bombing raids in WW2 where most of the historical buildings were destroyed. The reconstruction after the war ultimately changed the face of the city, since the city council decided to rupture a lot of buildings instead of repairing them. In the 1950s/60s the space was filled with some architecturally questionable buildings like the new central station (pic 1). All of the big churches from the 12th to the 14th century survived or were repaired though, like the cathedrale with the famous lion in front of it(pic 2 and pics 3, 4, 5) as well as other historical buildings (pic 6, 7) and a lot of apartment houses of the 19th century (pic 8 ).

The population is around 250,000 these days and the most important employer is Volkswagen (fabrication of chassis, 5,700 employees and home of Volkswagen Financial Services ~5,000 employees). The technical university (pic 9) with more than 18,000 students is focussed on research and development in Mechanical Engineering, but there are fields of study for nearly every other science as well. There are some museums and the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum (pic 10) is probably the most important of them. It's been the first open to the public museum in germany and hosts paintings by Rubens, Vermeer and Rembrandt.

Unlike many other german cities, the city centre is still full of shops and even the ducal castle was recently rebuilt to be the home of a new mall (pic 11).

My favourite location in town is the Altstadtmarkt (pic 12). Every wednesday and saturday a farmers market is taking place there with fresh local fruit and vegetable.

I actually live in a suburb, ~6 km south of the city centre, but that's no problem thanks to good urban public transport and a ride with a bicycle through some parks is just twenty minutes, although unnecessary most of the times since here are two supermarkets and a big mall as well.

Altogether, I like Braunschweig very much. It's not as hectic as a real metropolis like Berlin, but big enough to offer everything you need.
